Ethiopian-American singer-songwriter Kelela Mizanekristos who is professionally known as Kelela is finally making her mark in the music industry. She released her debut mixtape in 2013, Cut 4 Me, and has been going strong ever since. She was born in Washington D.C. and grew up in Maryland. At a young age, she started playing violin and sang in her school's choir. Later while in college she started singing at jazz cafe's expanding her repertoire.
This singer doesn't let herself be pigeonholed into just one genre of music. She later joined a progressive metal band called Dizzy Spells. When she released her mixtape the popular music genre in London was grime. The grime genre is a mix of electronic music with dancehall, hip-hop, and jungle music. In 2015 she released her debut EP, Hallucinogen which Kelela says was about the beginning, middle, and end of a relationship. She has been a featured singer on other artists' records such as singer-songwriter Solange, and in 2017 made her album debut with Take Me Apart. It's been 5 years since she released any songs and just released her new single, On The Run with her 2nd album Raven to be released on February 10th of 2023.
