Monophonics

The groovy soulful sounds of this San Francisco band had me thinking of bands such as SoulAlive and 60's psychedelic bands. Their sound is funky and you just can't help but groove to the music. The band consists of guitarist Ian McDonald, bassist Myles O'Mahony, saxophonist Alex Baky, trumpeter Ryan Scott, drummer Austin Bohlman, and vocalist, keyboardist Kelly Finnigan. Originally the band started out as an instrumental band but that quickly changed. Some of the band members know each other since high school. Guitarist, Ian McDonald remembers his first concert which was Pink Floyd and the first song he ever played was Jimi Hendrix, Hey Joe. The band took their name from the Moog synthesizer which is monophonic(one note at a time).

The band formed in 2005 and has released several albums since then. They have built quite a reputation, especially in the Bay Area. Their brand of music is a psychedelic soul or sometimes called Black Rock which is a subgenre of soul music. All I can say is that I was hooked from the first time I heard their song, Into The Infrasounds from their album, Let's Funky Groove. If you haven't seen them live or heard their albums they are a must-listen. They are about to release their latest album, Sage Motel in May but in the meantime check out their single, Warpaint. Support independent music and musicians. Happy listening!
