Nothing catches my attention more than hearing an artist whose music sounds like or reminds me of Parliament-Funkadelic in sound. His band Laneous and the Family Yah have been around for years. He originates from Brisbane, Australia, and has released several albums down under. Many have had a hard time putting his music into a certain music genre but upon listening to it we can safely say it's Funk pure and simple. The leader of this fascinating band is Lachlan Mitchell a self-taught prodigy and who is considered a world-class guitarist, vocalist, composer, and visual artist.
Lachlan Mitchell's inspiration came from D'Angelo's Voodoo album. He was the leader of a group named Kafka which mixed funk, soul, and Afro Cuban jazz. He re-invented himself in the persona of Mr. Laneous and with his family Yah, a group of musicians that seems to constantly be in flux has been creating soulful funk for your ears. The band released their first LP St Ill Regal in 2009 after hearing Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life album to much acclaim.
Since then he has caught the attention of Gilles Peterson in the U.K. and he has traveled to both the U.K. and the U.S. In 2019 he released his solo effort, Monstera Deliciosa, and last year was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2020 Gilles Peterson Worldwide Awards. His music bends all genres and has been touted as the new face for Nu Jazz music. In August of last year, he released his latest, Elsewhere/Flawless. We are sure to hear more from this super talented artist.
