If you read some press on Mista Silva, you’ll notice a recurring theme: warmth and turning up the heat. Born Papa Kwame Amponsa, Silva hails from the Brockley neighborhood of London but injects his music with Afrobeats, staying true to his Ghanian ancestry.
Back in 2012, The Guardian hailed him one of the top 8 Afrobeat artists to listen to. With BBC Radio 1xtra as another early booster, the then-unsigned artist’s single “Now Wats Up” received plenty of airplay. With momentum growing, he released his debut EP, Full Vim, in 2012, garnering enough appreciation to land him a deal with Polydor Records.
In 2015, two EPs followed, Let It Off 1 and 2, along with singles like “Mafia” and 2017’s “Murda,” released on Fresh 2 Def Entertainment. His latest offering is the mix-tape Out of the Darkest, with the lead single “Don’t Give Up” described by Highsnobiety, as steamy, naturally.
