Dallas native Danny Lee Blackwell is the mastermind behind Night Beats, a one-man band he conceived in 2009. The title of his latest work is Rajan (“king” in Sanskrit), which is also his real middle name. Outlaw R&B is both the title of his last album and an apt description of his sound -- a fusion of psychedelia, garage rock, and soul. Ambrose Kenny-Smith (King Gizzard) appears as a guest, adding vocals and harmonica. Various reviewers have noted influences of tropicalia, country, and even Asian sounds, so it’s fair to say the soundscape here is rich and captivating.
