Jack White spent his pandemic days off the road and writing enough songs to fill two albums. The first of these is Fear of the Dawn (with Entering Heaven Alive hitting in July) on his Third Man Records label. On the former, White offers up plenty of distorted guitar-heavy work, but this is far from a straight-ahead rock record. Here he’s playing with dub techniques, sampling, lots of effects, and a variety of styles and moods. Q-tip guests on Hi de Ho, sampling Cab Calloway Consequence muses “‘Morning, Noon and Night’ is so catchy it sounds like the Kinks could’ve recorded it in the late ‘60s.” Pitchfork calls the record, “An illogical fusion of blues-rock and carnival prog, this music is genuinely, imaginatively weird.” And if you like to listen to an artist pushing his boundaries, that could be just what you’re looking for.
