New Music Monday: Brant Bjork

Brant Bjork formed his first band with his high school buddies, a group that would later become desert/stoner rock legend, Kyuss. He left after Welcome to Sky Valley was released, citing artistic differences with fellow songrwriter and guitarist Josh Homme as to the group’s direction. They would work together again on the Desert Sessions, and Bjork would continue to collaborate with other former bandmates over the years..

A prolific musician (he plays guitar, bass, and drums and even sings), songwriter and producer, Bjork stayed active in the desert rock and punk scenes working with Fu Manchu, Solarfeast, Mondo Generator, LAB, and others. He released his first solo record in Jalamanta 1999, performing on all of the instruments. His music has moved into funkier realms over the past few years. His new release, Bougainvillea Suite, is no exception. Notes Louder, the record is as “awash…with that signature period organ sound – a bit like The Doors or Iron Butterfly indulging in a groovy bit of dusty desert rock.”
