Kawann "O’hene" Shockley is a rapper/multi-instrumentalist has had an interesting journey. He was born in North Philly but as a teenager lived with his aunt and uncle in Ghana. A precocious teen, he recorded his first demo at age 13, which led to a TV appearance on a local show called Smash TV. Just a year later he was performing in the capital in front of 50,000 people. His recording of the song "Amfuo" was a popular radio hit.
Returning to Philly, the early 2000s kept him busy with the group Exit-Us, teaching at Temple University and creating his debut full-length album, The Rapademics. Adding elements from classical music, the album featured a track with a waltz time signature. Clearly, Ohene is not afraid to experiment.
In the past 20 years, he’s released nearly 30 albums, produced others for a variety of artists, and continued to explore the boundaries of his chosen genre.
