I was completely captured by this artist when I was listening to her latest song. I kept seeing what I thought was a bagpipe but smaller. I have since learned it is called small pipes. It originates in Northumbria and Kathryn Tickell and her band honor the instrument and its people.
She started playing the smallpipes at age nine and was inspired by her family members and well-known folk singers Joe Hutton, Tom Hunter, and more. She grew up hearing the stories from the people of Northumberland and has incorporated that into her storytelling in her music. She has played with the best of them from singer-songwriter Sting, The Chieftains, Jacob Collier, and more. She has been releasing music since she was 16 years old. She has recorded 16 albums and released them independently. She not only plays smallpipes but also the fiddle.
She just released her new single, “Long for Light” and her new album Cloud Horizons will be released on September 1st. Check out this great singer-songwriter and listen to the great sound of the smallpipes. Support independent music and musicians worldwide. Happy listening!
