THE JAZZ CAFE

Meet Sylvester Uzoma Onyejiaka II known as Sly5thAve who has captured my ears with his new single. This is a jazz artist to keep your eye on.

Growing up he was exposed to the music his parents played around the house. The music varied from West African music to soul and jazz. He took it all in and started playing saxophone by age 11 along with piano and some percussion at church then continued as he grew up. Later while working with jazz musician and mentor Philip Lassiter, the legendary Prince hired him to join his New Power Generation band playing saxophone in his horn section. He debuted in 2014 with his EP Akuma, a tribute to his Nigerian roots. A year later he released Vein Melter and captured the attention of well-known British DJ Giles Peterson. He is part of nu-jazz artist Quantic’s live band and collaborates with jazz duo Ghost Note. Sly5thAve mixes jazz with hip-hop, soul, and funk

He just released his new album, Liberation, and single of the same name. This is an album I can’t stop listening to, check out the songs “Water Suite(Sanctuary)” and “Exodus.” He is now on tour so be sure to catch him live. Support indie music and musicians worldwide. Happy listening!
