I don’t usually see too many jazz musicians from Kentucky, but multi-instrumentalist Myles Cochran is one such artist. Growing up, he heard quite an array of genres: folk, jazz, rock, and classical were in frequent rotation is his household. He plays all manner of guitars (acoustic, electric, lap steel and bass) as well as piano and drums. Mixing elements from many of these various styles, he’s released an unusual record that identifies as Americana jazz.
He left Kentucky to pursue his career, living in NYC and working as a producer and engineer. Unsung was released in 2020. Full of delicate melodies and pensive moods, it sounds like it could be a soundtrack to some character-driven dramatic film. Now residing in London, he’s released a double album, You Are Here. The record is full of atmosphere and “lilting steel guitar melds in a dreamlike swirl alongside dusty standup bass, soaring cellos, and Cochran's myriad acoustic and electric guitar flourishes, with a splash of electronic production thrown-in for good measure.” (All About Jazz) The record also features cellist Michelle Packman and Reggie Jones on upright bass.
