Joey Alexander

THE JAZZ CAFE

by Rosie G.

November 26, 2023

Indonesian jazz piano player Joey Alexander has parents who got him hooked on jazz from the time he was a child. His father was a musician and his parents loved jazz and played it at home quite often. He is a self-taught piano player after listening to his dad’s records. Music runs in his blood and has two family members who are well-known musicians in Indonesia.

Joey Alexander’s musical influences are John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Harry Connick Jr., McCoy Tyner, Miles Davis, and many more. He did get to play for his idol and Herbie Hancock told him he believed in him and that set the tone for a career in jazz music. He is a child prodigy who upon playing songs by Thelonious Monk, Chick Corea, and John Coltrane caught the attention of Wynton Marsalis. He made his debut in 2015 with the album My Favorite Things at just 11 years old.

He has released several albums to critical acclaim and just released his latest, Continuance. The album is fantastic and every song is just heaven to listen to. He is now on tour and will be playing 2 shows a night at the Legendary Birdland Jazz Club here in NYC from December 5-9. Support independent music and musicians worldwide. Happy listening!
