Jesús Molina

THE JAZZ CAFE

July 21, 2024

Colombian pianist Jesús Molina brings home with him wherever he goes. He started playing when he was just four years old, when his grandmother gave him his first keyboard. He went to Berklee on a scholarship from the Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation. Energetic and technically brilliant, he is well on his way to becoming a sought-after collaborator. He’s brimming with ideas, saying he wants to do tributes to some of his key influences, like Oscar Peterson and Chick Corea. He also sings and plays soprano sax.

Molina infuses elements of various genres into his music, from traditional sounds of his homeland to Latin and American jazz, middle eastern and Indian music. He recently released his debut album, Selah (meaning “lift up”), with backing from fellow Berklee alums bassist Guy Bernfeld and drummer Cain Daniel (and guest Hubert Laws on the featured track). Selah was produced by Bobby Colomby, former Blood, Sweat and Tears drummer and producer for artists ranging from Jaco Pastorius to the Jacksons.

Already making a name for himself at just 27 and playing alongside heavyweights like Branford Marsalis at the Boston Pops, it will be fun to watch as Molina continues to develop his unique voice.
