Independent jazz saxophonist Emma Rawicz is an artist to keep your eyes and ears on. Based in the U.K., last year she won Jazz Newcomer of the Year at the ParliamentaryJazz Awards. She does not disappoint.
She didn’t start playing the saxophone right away, her first instrument was the violin. Later she switched to playing the saxophone and we are so glad she did. Her discovery of jazz didn’t happen until age 15 and she is a huge fan of John Coltrane. She is one of the rare musicians with chromesthesia (a type of synesthesia) who can see colors when she hears sounds. She attended the Royal Academy of Music and after graduating started playing around town. She is a permanent fixture at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London. At just 21 years old she has already released a couple of albums. She just released her new album Chroma this past August.
.
Her music is a mix of modern jazz with Afro-Cuban rhythms and funk grooves. Check out songs, “Middle Ground” and “Rangwali” but to be honest the whole album is amazing. She is now on tour throughout Europe and we hope she comes to the States for some shows. Support independent music and musicians worldwide. Happy listening!
