Jazz saxophonist Donny McCaslin has a funky and soulful feel that I love. This Californian grew up with music played at home through his father who played the piano and vibraphone.
At the age of 12 Donny McCaslin started playing tenor saxophone and things took off from there. He played with his father’s ensemble and by high school had his own band. He has played at the Monterey Jazz Festival many times and will play it again in September. He made his debut in 1998 with the album Exile and Discovery and has released several albums since then. In 2016 he played on rock legend David Bowie’s last album Blackstar. He's loved experimenting and improvising and is not one to get cornered into just one genre, hence the new album title, I Want More and I can’t stop listening to it. My favorites from the album are “Fly MY Space Ship” with its reggae groove and the title song from the album, “I Want More” which is funky. He is on tour so be sure to catch him live. Support independent music and musicians, happy listening!
