The U.K. jazz scene is always hot with new talent. Meet drummer/singer-songwriter, Donna Thompson from London, England who has been capturing audiences every night at Dalton’s jazz hub. She has a unique vocal technique that is mesmerizing. She sings songs that make you believe in the community.
She grew up with her parents playing Motown music at home. Her mother was a singer and her father loved the bass. She also grew up listening to Gospel music and loved rock music. Donna Thompson had been leading the R&B band Lightboxes since 2016 and thought she would never be able to launch her own solo album. Her luck changed with a chance meeting with the owner of PRAH studios, Stephen Bass. This meeting occurred while she played a gig for jazz artist Alabaster DePlume and was approached with the conditions for her EP of original material. The EP was released last July and titled Something True. Her music is a mix of jazz with R&B/funk and soul. Her singing is smokey with a great feel. Some say her voice is reminiscent of Lianne La Havas and Minnie Riperton. This is an artist to watch and we can’t wait to hear more. Support independent music and musicians worldwide. Happy listening!
