THE JAZZ CAFE

February 2, 2025

The members of Swiss piano trio met in Zurich 15 years ago. They’ve played together for some time but waited until this time last year to release their debut album, Is This Water. Commended by critics for their subtle, minimalist approach, Divr is carving out a fascinating niche for themselves.

Employing what they’ve touted as “multi-directional time,” the trio relies on its improvisational approach to music in original compositions and interpretations of rock and psychedelic pop songs by Radiohead (“All I Need”) and Broadcast ("Echo's Answer"), respectively. “You could hear three different timings, but on the other hand it’s together. We land in the same place. It’s not done with maths, it’s more about entering a flow,” the band explains.

Chosen as one of Bandcamp’s best Jazz albums of 2024, Is This Water also received high marks from the Quietus (“each of the nine tracks on Is This Water contains a radiant turn of phrase that makes it unique”), All Music (“The finished product is usually elegant, intricate, and mysterious.”), and DownBeat (“To loop and do something so consistently different with the format, like surfing over a whirlpool, is a marvel to behold.”).
