Chris Standring

THE JAZZ CAFE

by Rosie G.

April 28, 2024

Contemporary jazz guitarist Chris Standring didn’t start like most musicians. He grew up on a farm in his native England surrounded by sheep and tractors. He did start his classical training by age 6. Growing up he loved listening to American jazz and later attended the London College of Music. There his mind was expanded learning about BeBop and more.

In 1981 he moved to Los Angeles and started playing with local jazz musicians. He caught the attention of other artists and is featured on the recordings by BeBe & CeCe Winans, Jody Watley, and others. He has also played with jazz artists such as Bob James, Richard Elliot, and more. He debuted in 1998 with the album Velvet and has released several albums since then. He mixes jazz with funk and blues. He says he is a big fan of Prince and that’s an A+ in my book. This artist not only plays guitar but also composes, arranges, and is a multi-instrumentalist. He just released his new album, As We Think, full of great solos and soulful grooves. He is now on tour so be sure to check him out live. Support independent music and musicians worldwide. Happy listening!
