A good friend sent me this indie jazz artist’s music to check out and I have to say he caught my attention. Meet Angus Fairbairn, professionally known as Alabaster DePlume from Manchester, England. He is a jazz saxophonist and spoken word artist whose music in the way he composes and mixes reminds me of avant-garde singer/artist, Laurie Anderson.
Since he was a child he loved making eccentric noises along with his brothers and then learned how to play the saxophone. When he grew up he started playing around town busking in the streets, and somehow came up with his professional name. The name comes from an incident where someone in a car yelled something rude that sounded like Alabaster DePlume. He debuted in 2015 with the album Peach, a jazz album with spoken word. Later in 2020, he released a critically acclaimed album To Cy and Lee: Instrumentals Vol 1, putting him on the map. My favorite songs on the album to check out are “Song of the Founding” and “If You’re Sure You Want To.”
He just released his latest, Come With Fierce Grace and it's fast becoming a favorite with such songs as, “Sibomandi” with its world music tones and “The Best Thing in the World.” He is now on tour and will play here in Brooklyn, NY at The Hall, Elsewhere so be sure to get your tix. Support independent music and musicians worldwide. Happy listening!
