I’ve noticed that rap has been changing over the past few years. Yes, it can still be hardcore at times but now rappers are exploring new progressive music styles and rappers like Kendrick Lamar have been changing the game and others are following. Rapper AJ McQueen is definitely one to watch. Born in St.Louis, MO he says that music saved his life. His experiences on the street helped him after being shot twice at age 15. He now dedicates his life to God’s purpose and raps with a healthy drive for his audience to digest. He believes “you can go from a negative environment to creating your environment.” He moved to Houston, Texas and his focus is now on being more conscious of his music.
He performs with a live band and his style of production is not Southern but his own style. He made his debut in 2015 with the single, Seven x Seventy which featured singer, Christon Gray. Since then he has released many singles and EPs with various singers and rappers. One of my favorite songs is Alkaline from his album, Goat-Ish which was released in 2019. He relates Alkaline to not only letting people know to drink plenty of water but also its relation to faith. He released both his new album, God Body 4 months ago and his latest single, Anxiety featuring singer John Patrick. Check out this prolific rapper and support independent music and musicians. Happy listening.
