A Tribe Called Red

Listen

In the past several years more and more members of the indigenous tribes of our country and Canada are making music for the masses. The younger generation while still being true to their traditions is mixing their tribal ancestral music with electronica, dance, hip-hop, and more. This group of electronica Dj's/producers have been making music and incorporating ancestral tribal songs with electronic beats. They originate from Ottawa, Canada, and are from the Cayuga First Nation and Mohawk First Nation tribes. Their music is a mix of hip-hop, reggae, moombahton mixed with elements of First Nations music. The members of the group say their group name is an homage to legendary hip-hop group A Tribe Called Quest. A Tribe Called Red's music has been described as indigenous EDM. The group was inspired by both Korean and South Asian youth parties in Ottawa. They decided to put together a dance party of their own in 2007 and named it Electric Pow Wow. Since then they have released several tracks online and in 2012 released their self-titled debut EP, which was nominated that year for the 2012 Polaris Music Prize. In 2013 they released their second EP, Nation II Nation, an album still spoken about today and perceived for its artistic indigenous resurgence in remixing of tradition and bridging of indigenous history and future. In 2014 they won 2 Juno Awards for Breakthrough Group of the Year and Electronic Album of the Year. Last year they released their latest single, Land Back during the 2020 Canadian pipeline protests.
